You have your ideal client avatar and you know your clear message. You may even have your elevator pitch memorized and ready to go, you share this with anyone that is willing to listen.
However, you don’t have your next steps. You have mapped out your vision and the future of the business but have you created a business plan? Have you broken that business plan into actual steps you can take everyday?
When I started in business I did my own thing, it wasn’t until I hired my first coach that things started to pick up for me.
I am not seeding for you to hire me, I want to be transparent. In fact, my first business coach only took care of one of my business breakdowns for me.
She provided other information, but she knew how important it was to focus on the step you are in.
She taught me list building.
List building is the first step in really breaking down your business plan and it is the foundation to your business. This is why my first business coach only focused on it.
Even Brian Tracy explains the importance of prospecting when you are working in sales.
Let me be clear here, when I say list building, I am talking about the activities that you do to build an email list. I am not talking about Facebook groups, pages or even instagram. Here is the thing, when you build on that platform you are not building your list unless they are subscribing. You do not own anything from Facebook.
You own your email list.
When you start your business you should start your email list. Okay, so this isn’t really a step but more advice. I did not start building my email list until I was in business for two years and it was a huge mistake.
I was running ads and was driving traffic to my “buy from me” page and never had any sales. I was missing a few key components in my system.
I wasn’t building trust and I had no idea what my ideal customer truly wanted.
If I would have created an optin, and invited them over for this free gift I would have had more time to build a relationship.
When you start early, you can build a relationship over time and you get off of sites you don’t own like Social Media platforms (they have their purpose and are great, trust me, but they can disappear).
Create something amazing
Remember to keep spam laws in your mind when you are building your email list. You cannot, I repeat, cannot add people to your email list without their permission.
Just because your cousin said she liked your website or your idea you cannot automatically add her. It doesn’t work that way.
The first step is to do market research and create an amazing free offer. You want this to be valuable and something a reader can walk away and implement.
Having a free offer on your website does a few things. First it gives your audience something to go to and optin so you can build your email list.
A free gift also helps you start to build out your connection and the like know and trust factor. We don’t want to invest into people we don’t know. An optin is the first step to creating an email list that will help you create real connection.
Driving traffic is where you work will really come into play. The “if you build it, they will come” saying from Field Of Dreams does not apply here.
Yes you have to build it but they will not automatically show up. You will not get ranked on google tomorrow and you will have to work to get this in front of your audience.
Now work can mean a monetary investment like ads or it can mean a time investment like summits, guest blogging and other list building activities.
There are plenty of list building activities out there and I started in ads. However, because I was missing the other pieces it got expensive and I did not have a return on that investment.
Over time I started working through the free or close to free list building activities and made some major mistakes but learned a lot.
When you start driving traffic do not rely only on one method. Choose two to three methods that work for you and carve out time for each activity.
List building online or offline is a must. This will give you an unlimited amount of prospects as Brian Tracy calls them. I call them community. When you build your email list you are building your community.
Focus on giving valuable information to this community before you jump right into the sale. Start with your market research so you can build a free offer that your ideal client wants. Once you create your offer focus on driving traffic to that offer.
Most importantly, build real connection. Connection is currency and when I say this I mean when you build connection you are building trust. People by from those they trust. Create that connection by starting your email list today.
